Web designer vs. web developer: What’s the difference? Who do you need?

It’s easy to get web designers and developers mixed up. They both help build websites, but they’re involved in very different areas.

A web designer brings a brand’s idea into an on-screen reality, and knows exactly what the specific audience will enjoy. A web developer builds the site’s core structure, using coding languages to construct logical, programmatic websites. Think of developers as construction workers, and web designers as architects.

What is a web designer?

Web design governs everything involved with the visual aesthetics, usability and everything else related to the visual aspects of the user interface and user experience.

A web designer concerned with what the user actually sees on their computer screen or mobile device, and less so about the mechanisms beneath the surface that make it all work. Through the use of Branding, Graphic design, Logo design, Layout/format, Placing call-to-action buttons, Color palettes, Typography, etc., they bring a digital experience to life.  A web designer makes your website appealing to the user by focusing on the style and overall feel. Web designers may be split into three main categories:

1. User Experience (UX) designer

A UX web designer’s job is to keep your visitors hooked. They will focus on a website design that your specific audience will enjoy to help encourage the user to revisit and/or recommend.

2. User Interface (UI) designer

A UI web designer helps to improve the way users interact with elements, or the interface, on your website. This is done by translating complex brand ideas and values into a website that’s enjoyable and easy to navigate.

3. Visual designer

A visual designer may be considered the master of web design. They are a mixture of both UX and UI. It’s their job to not only improve the user’s journey but to also solve design issues. They also help to conceptualize a brand’s unique style or tone of voice.

What is a web developer?

A web developer builds the site’s core structure, using coding languages to construct logical, programmatic websites. A web developer may build a website’s framework using software like Javascript and JQuery, aiming to craft a smooth-running website. Web development governs all the code that makes a website tick. It can be split into two categories: front-end and back-end.

The front-end or client-side of an application is the code responsible for determining how the website will actually display. Front-end web developers don’t usually create design mock-ups, select typography, or pick color palettes—these are usually provided to them by the designer or creative director. They may build the site using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript to create things the user can see, like complex forms and other frameworks the user can actually interact with.

The back-end or server-side of an application is responsible for managing data within the database and serving that data to the front-end to be displayed. The back-end is where the website’s core structure is designed. These developers are experts in programming and using complex software languages like Java, SQL and C#. The work they do is not seen by users because it involves coding on the web servers and databases. In short, their job is to create logical, functional websites. They also spend a lot of time monitoring, troubleshooting, testing and fixing bugs.

Most developers today are skilled in front-end and back-end website development. Some may call this person a full-stack developer because he/she works across different layers or stacks.

Does Your Website Need A Designer Or Developer?

Knowing whether you need a web designer or web developer is key to making sure that your website meets your needs.

If your primary goal is to have a website with a professional look to it, then you’re going to want a web designer. The web designer will help implement design, layout and navigation, strategies in alignment with the branding of your business. Effectively, the web designer will bring a sense of aesthetic and style that best appeals to your target audience/customers.

On the other hand, if your need is more functionality based and you need it to meet some specific demands for customer or employee use purposes (i.e. integrating intranet features,  advanced plugins, mobile apps, advanced forms, troubleshooting hosting, server issues, loading time, page security, etc.) then the web developer may be a better fit for you.

In most cases, you might only need your web designer for the time frame needed to create your site with the option to manage yourself and/or get additional assistance as needed. Whereas with a web developer, you will most likely need to have a monthly budget set aside as they will be the constant manager of your site.

How much does a web designer vs web developer cost?

In real life, the cost for these services can defiantly vary drastically. A freelance web designer usually costs between $10-$60 p/h, while hiring a freelance developer normally costs $30-$100 p/h. A medium sized web design agency (that may provide both sides of website construction) will cost between $65-$200 p/h for a basic website.
